Celebrity crush: Rose Byrne

Sorry I didn't get a revised entry up Wednesday; family matters and writing ate up the time. Today's entry features an actress currently appearing on DirecTV's Damages and seen in theaters this summer in X-Men: First Class.

Name: Rose Byrne (images -- some NSFW | Web site | Twitter -- not verified)
Hometown: The Sydney suburb of Belmain, Australia, according to her Wikipedia profile. Though she's of Scottish and Irish ancestry.
Best Known For: Rose's most prominent work since coming to the United States has come on the cable drama Damages -- which began on the FX channel before going to satellite carrier DirecTV this year. She's also found some of her biggest theatrical movie success this year, co-starring in the comedy Bridesmaids and the superhero film X-Men: First Class alongside fellow celebrity crush Jennifer Lawrence.
Humble Beginnings: At age 15, Rose made her film premiere in a movie called Dallas Doll. Numerous Australian TV roles followed before she turned 18, not listed below. Early film works in her adult years included Two Hands with co-star and fellow Australian Heath Ledger.

Other works of more prominence in America, prior to her American breakthrough role in Damages, include playing an aide to Natalie Portman's Padme Amidala in Star Wars: Episode II; appearing alongside Brad Pitt, Eric Bana, and Diane Kruger in the swords-and-sandals epic Troy; working with future Doctor Who star David Tennant and Peter O'Toole in a TV retelling of Casanova; and the horror sequel 28 Weeks Later.

She's also appeared in the science fiction thriller Knowing and the comedies I Love You Too and Get Him to the Greek in between seasons of Damages.
The Courteney Cox Factor: Rose has appeared in multiple music videos and was featured on an EP cover for Australian musician Alex Lloyd (who's featured her in at least two of his videos).
Why Ye Olde Podcaster Likes Her: Though Rose is sometimes too skinny for my likes -- and she's always thin -- when she's not, she reminds me of the best of fellow crushes Shiri Appleby, Reiko Aylesworth, and Marisol Nichols. I think it's the eyes and the mouth. But I also admire the intense acting ability she's shown on Damages, which is always excellently performed even when the plots at times strain credibility.

Seriously, she can act -- few actors or actresses of any age can hold their own against Glenn Close, but she manages it marvelously. And her work in the 2009 drama Adam -- the story of a cognitively normal woman falling for a man with Asperger syndrome -- was amazing to behold.

Celebrity crush: Jaimie Alexander

Today's actress is not a goddess, but she's played one on a movie theater near you this summer.

Amazon and iTunes links follow. Any affiliate payments earned from your purchase or rental will help pay the hosting fees for my podcasts, so please consider clicking.

Name: Jaimie Alexander (images | Web site | Twitter)
Hometown: Born in Greenville, S.C., but raised in Grapevine, Texas, for most of her childhood, according to her Wikipedia profile.
Best Known For: Jaimie appeared in this summer's Marvel Comics-inspired movie Thor as the Asgardian warrior goddess Sif. She previously had a regular role in the cast of the ABC Family science fiction series Kyle XY as "Jessi (XX)," a female counterpart to the titular lead character -- both of them superpowered teenagers who had been grown in a laboratory. (In a genius bit of casting, former Brat Packer Ally Sheedy -- to whom she bears more than a passing resemblance -- played her mother.)

Since the premature cancellation of Kyle XY, she's recurred on Nurse Jackie as a sister-in-law of Edie Falco's chemically altered nurse character. Her credits also include guest appearances on CSI: Miami, Bones, and fellow celebrity crush Piper Perabo's spy series Covert Affairs.
Humble Beginnings: Early TV roles include appearances on the edgy comedy It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and the short-lived hostage negotiator drama Standoff. Early film roles include the horror film Rest Stop and the comedy Squirrel Trap (the latter her first film credit, around age 20).
The Courteney Cox Factor: Jaimie has appeared in a music video for a song by Matthew Perryman Jones, of whom I had never heard before writing this.
Why Ye Olde Podcaster Likes Her: A wrestler in her high school years, Jaimie Alexander has the physical presence to play these action roles; she can not only take your breath away with her beauty, but she could also knock it out of you.

While I thought the casting of fellow crush Adrianne Palicki for David E. Kelley's ill-fated Wonder Woman TV pilot was a good, if offbeat choice -- loving her work on Friday Night Lights and thinking her genre work on Smallville and in the Aquaman pilot both suggested she'd be up for an adventure role -- Jaimie's comments on the Wonder Woman character at a fan site make me think she'd be the best possible pick for the part:
“I actually read ‘Wonder Woman,’ and here’s the thing about her: she’s more of a physical presence than anything else,” she told FilmCritic. “You don’t get to really know her on the inside. It’s all about her boobs. And I can say that; I actually read the comics. Even though she had one of the coolest story lines, they still made her the all-American beauty queen.”
And despite my posting a cheesecake covered-topless photo of Jaimie Alexander here, I genuinely think she gets Wonder Woman and, based on her Kyle XY work (where she played a multi-layered, not quite angelic, character), that she would have the chops for the role beyond the physical demands. (In my opinion, the David E. Kelley pilot was doomed ... from the moment it became a David E. Kelley project.)

From JaimieAlexander.net.
Her commitments with Marvel films may make it impossible for Jaimie Alexander to play the part now even if the right script came along -- I seem to recall hearing that the actors getting involved in their films were now signing a standard nine-picture deal, but I'm not sure whether that's just the leads or also the supporting actors and actresses -- but she'd kick ass as Diana.

Music video appearance: "Save You" by Matthew Perryman Jones (iTunes)
The fact she's guest-starred on Bones makes
me realize -- she kinda reminds me of that
show's star, Emily Deschanel, too.
Voice work: Thor: God of Thunder (2011 video game) (Amazon)
TV and Web series credits: Covert Affairs, season 2 (Amazon | iTunes) * Nurse Jackie, season 3 (Amazon | iTunes) * Ultradome, season 1: "Han Solo vs. Indiana Jones" (Amazon | iTunes) * Bones, season 4: "The Beaver in the Otter" (Amazon | iTunes) * CSI: Miami, season 7: "Flight Risk" (Amazon | iTunes) * Kyle XY, season 3 (Amazon | iTunes) * Kyle XY, season 2 (Amazon | iTunes) * Kyle XY, season 1 (note: she's not in the first season, but it obviously lays the groundwork for the two-thirds where she DOES appear) (Amazon | iTunes) * Watch Over Me (2006) (Amazon | iTunes) * Standoff (2006): Pilot (Amazon | iTunes) * It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, season 1: "Underage Drinking: A National Concern" (Amazon | iTunes)

Celebrity crush: Eva Amurri

Today's entry features an up-and-coming model-turned-second-generation actress.

Amazon and iTunes links follow. Any affiliate payments earned from your purchase or rental will help pay the hosting fees for my podcasts, so please consider clicking.

Name: Eva Amurri (images -- some NSFW | Web site | Twitter)
Hometown: New York City, according to her Wikipedia profile. She is the daughter of Italian director Franco Amurri and American actress Susan Sarandon.
Best Known For: Eva's longest television role to date has been on Californication, as a college student of Hank's (David Duchovny) whom he later encounters working in a strip club. She's also made appearances on the medical dramas Mercy and House, in the films New York, I Love You and Saved! (which starred fellow celebrity crush Jena Malone), on the sitcom How I Met Your Mother and in the online comedy Children's Hospital.
Humble Beginnings: Eva started work on screen well before she turned 18. She appeared in Bob Roberts (written, directed by, and starring her mother's longtime love Tim Robbins) as "Girl in Hospital" in 1992; she was born in 1985. Similarly, she appeared in flashback as a 9-year-old Sister Helen Prejean in 1995's Dead Man Walking, which starred her mother as the nun-turned-anti-capital punishment activist.

Quite a few of her childhood and early teen appearances on film are in her mother's projects (the Natalie Portman film Anywhere But Here, an episode of Friends) -- the only one I'm listing below is The Banger Sisters, which I'd already listed for sale elsewhere on this site, under the profile of fellow celebrity crush Erika Christensen.
Obligatory Edgy Stuff: As noted, her breakthrough role came playing a stripper on Californication, which -- as a premium cable program -- didn't have to settle for strippers wearing lingerie on the stage. She inherited more than just acting chops from her famously va-va-voom mother.
Why Ye Olde Podcaster Likes Her: In addition to the va-va-voomness, her work on Mercy and House have shown seeds of the same dramatic acting skills that made her mother not just another buxom starlet. Eva may well have the same staying power if she makes the right choices in roles.
TV and Web series credits: Celebrity Ghost Stories, season 3, episode 2 (Amazon | iTunes) * Children's Hospital, season 2: "I Am Not Afraid of Any Ghost" (Amazon | iTunes) * House, season 6: "The Choice" (Amazon | iTunes) * Mercy (2009) (Amazon | iTunes) * Californication, season 3 (Amazon | iTunes) * How I Met Your Mother, season 5: "The Playbook" (Amazon | iTunes)

Celebrity crush: Billie Piper (revised)

Here's a revised entry featuring one of the original entries in the series, as memory serves.

Amazon and iTunes links follow. Any affiliate payments earned from your purchase or rental will help pay the hosting fees for my podcasts, so please consider clicking.

Name: Billie Piper (images -- some NSFW | Web site | Twitter)
Hometown: The southwestern England city of Swindon, according to her Wikipedia profile.
Best Known For: Piper is a former pop singer whose largest claims to fame have come in acting -- playing the companion to first Christopher Eccleston and then David Tennant on Doctor Who and, more recently, starring in the racy British TV series Secret Diary of a Call Girl, which aired on premium cable network Showtime in the United States.

Other work include a television production of Mansfield Park and starring as Sally Lockhart in historical thrillers based on a series of novels by Philip Pullman.
Humble Beginnings: Beyond her pop music work, she had an uncredited bit part in the 1996 film version of Evita. Other TV work includes the British series The Canterbury Tales in a modern-day telling of "The Miller's Tale" and ShakespeaRe-Told in a production of "Much Ado About Nothing" re-cast to a television station.
Obligatory Edgy Stuff: Her first husband was 16 years older; she was an unabashed lip-syncer during her musician days; and she got naked a lot on Secret Diary of a Call Girl, as one might imagine. (Though she used body doubles in the second season, filmed while she was pregnant.)
Why Ye Olde Podcaster Likes Her: Her Doctor Who tenure probably holds up as the strongest performance by a companion in the modern era of the series, though comedienne Catherine Tate's turn was surprisingly good. (Her successors have included fellow celebrity crushes Freema Agyeman and Karen Gillan.)

But furthermore, she just oozes sex appeal. Even though her Rose Tyler was less overtly sexual than current companion Amy Pond (Gillan), there was just something naughty in her eyes, in her smile, in her turn of phrase.
Film and TV-movie credits: Truth About Lies (2012) (Amazon | iTunes) * The Raven (2010 short) (Amazon | iTunes) * The Shadow in the North (2007 TV-movie) (Amazon | iTunes) * Mansfield Park (2007 TV-movie) (Amazon | iTunes) * The Ruby in the Smoke (2006 TV-movie) (Amazon | iTunes) * Spirit Trap (2005) (Amazon | iTunes) * Things to Do Before You're 30 (Amazon | iTunes) * The Calcium Kid (Amazon | iTunes) * Bella and the Boys (2004 TV-movie) (Amazon | iTunes)

Celebrity crush: Janet Montgomery

Today's profile features one of the two actresses who joined the cast of Fox's DC Comics-based Human Target series in its second (and final) season.

Amazon and iTunes links follow. Any affiliate payments earned from your purchase or rental will help pay the hosting fees for my podcasts, so please consider clicking.

Name: Janet Montgomery (images | Facebook | Twitter)
Hometown: The English city of Bournemouth, according to her Wikipedia profile.
Best Known For: Janet's two longest-running TV roles couldn't be much different. She played Ames, a thief who joined Christopher Chance's team on Human Target (somewhat as comic relief) in its second season, and she's played Eric's assistant Jennie on HBO's comedy Entourage.

Her most high-profile film to date is Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan, playing a fellow dancer jealous of Natalie Portman's character -- the only one of the dancers with a British accent, really only speaking in a couple of scenes, but I was happy to recognize her.

This fall, she'll be seen onscreen with fellow crushes Rashida Jones and Zooey Deschanel in the comedy Our Idiot Brother.
Humble Beginnings: Wikipedia notes that she appeared on a British children's show called Short Change when she was 12, alongside her brother. She later guest-starred on the edgy teen drama Skins and starred in a few direct-to-DVD horror films.

In America, she starred in a Lifetime made-for-TV movie called Accused at 17, playing a young woman who insists she's been framed for murder by her supposed best friend. (This being Lifetime, of course her mother embarks on a crusade to find the truth.)
On Human Target.
Why Ye Olde Podcaster Likes Her: She brought a lot of fun to her work on Human Target, as well as helping pretty up what had been a very testosterone-heavy show. Sad to see it end after just two short seasons.

I'm presuming she'll be in the final season of Entourage, hence my including season 8 below. (I haven't seen that show in a few years, so I've also missed the appearances by fellow crush Autumn Reeser, sadly.)
Film and TV-movie credits: Live at the Foxes Den (Amazon | iTunes) * Our Idiot Brother (Amazon | iTunes) * Black Swan (Amazon | iTunes) * Dead Cert (2010) (Amazon | iTunes) * The Rapture (2010) (Amazon | iTunes) * Accused at 17 (2009 TV-movie) (Amazon | iTunes) * Wrong Turn 3: Left for Dead (Amazon | iTunes) * The Hills Run Red (2009) (Amazon | iTunes) * Flushed (2008 short) (Amazon | iTunes) * Dis/Connected (2008 TV-movie) (Amazon | iTunes)
TV and Web series credits: Entourage, season 8 (Amazon | iTunes) * Human Target, season 2 (Amazon | iTunes) * The League, season 2: "Vegas Draft" (Amazon | iTunes) * Entourage, season 7 (Amazon | iTunes) * Skins (U.K.), season 2: "Tony" (Amazon | iTunes)

Celebrity crush: Katee Sackhoff (revised)

Here's a revised entry for an actress who's perfected the art of kicking ass while also looking good.

Amazon and iTunes links follow. Any affiliate payments earned from your purchase or rental will help pay the hosting fees for my podcasts, so please consider clicking.

Name: Katee Sackhoff (images | Web site | Twitter)
Hometown: Born in Portland, Ore., and raised in St. Helens, Ore., according to her Wikipedia profile.
Best Known For: Sackhoff has been acting for several years, but it wasn't until the 2003 Battlestar Galactica miniseries (which then launched the TV series) that she became a star -- a star who was preceded by controversy, with her character Starbuck having undergone a change in gender since the original Galactica movie and TV series in the 1970s.

Other work includes multi-episode arcs on CSI and NBC's ill-fated Bionic Woman reboot (where she landed in a villainous role written much more interestingly than the material given to series star and fellow crush Michelle Ryan), and a co-starring role in the pretty terrible final season of 24, where she was saddled with one of the show's worst subplots ever. (Not her fault.)

As Kara "Starbuck" Thrace on the
contemporary Battlestar Galactica.
She's also put in a couple of riotous guest-shots on the sitcom The Big Bang Theory as ... Battlestar Galactica actress Katee Sackhoff, the ever-judgmental object of one character's sexual fantasies.

Katee's done tons of animation voice work, including multiple episodes of Robot Chicken and playing She-Hulk on The Super Hero Squad Show. In development is Longmire, a mystery pilot for the A&E cable network that also features fellow crush Cassidy Freeman.
Humble Beginnings: Her first role was in the Kristen Dunst made-for-TV movie Fifteen and Pregnant (which was exactly what it sounds like). She had a recurring role on MTV's late-night soap Undressed and played Richard Dreyfuss' daughter in the short-lived drama The Education of Max Bickford.

As a Hollywood vixen. Daaaaaaaaayum.
She was in the Leelee Sobieski/Albert Brooks movie My First Mister and the horror film Halloween: Resurrection pre-Galactica.
What the Hell? Dept.: Katee did a few episodes of Nip/Tuck but was replaced the next season, due to scheduling conflicts, with Rose McGowan ... who looks nothing like her ... playing the same character. No, I don't understand it either. (Glad I never got deeply hooked on that train wreck of a show.)
Missed Opportunities: Sackhoff shot a pilot for Dick Wolf titled Lost and Found, but NBC didn't pick it up, perhaps partly due to the ultimately disastrous move to fill the final hour of its prime-time schedule five nights a week with Jay Leno instead of the traditional dramas.
Why Ye Olde Podcaster Likes Her: First off, there's a lot to admire about her on a personal level. Katee is a cancer survivor (thyroid, diagnosed shortly after filming ended on Galactica -- apparently she wasn't feeling well during the final months of work on the series, Wikipedia notes). And she stopped smoking after receiving letters from young girls who cited her as a role model, according to her IMDB profile.

Also, her Galactica and Bionic Woman work, in particular, showcased her dramatic acting skills memorably. Yet she's also able to bring The Funny to a 90-second appearance on The Big Bang Theory with seemingly no effort.

She's certainly fit for action roles. But add all this to her smoking-hot looks, and she's the whole package.
TV and Web series credits: CSI, season 11 (Amazon | iTunes) * The Big Bang Theory, season 4: "The Hot Troll Deviation" (Amazon | iTunes) * 24, season 8 (Amazon | iTunes) * The Big Bang Theory, season 3: "The Vengeance Formulation" (Amazon | iTunes) * Battlestar Galactica: The Plan (2009 TV-movie) (Amazon | iTunes) * Battlestar Galactica, season 4 (Amazon | iTunes) * Law & Order, season 19: "Knock Off" (Amazon | iTunes) * Nip/Tuck, season 5 (Amazon | iTunes) * Battlestar Galactica: Razor (2007 TV-movie) (Amazon | iTunes) * Bionic Woman (2007) (Amazon | iTunes) * Battlestar Galactica, season 3 (Amazon | iTunes) * Battlestar Galactica, season 2 (Amazon | iTunes) * Battlestar Galactica, season 1 (Amazon | iTunes) * Cold Case, season 1: "Volunteers" (Amazon | iTunes) * Boomtown, season 2: "The Big Picture" (Amazon | iTunes) * Battlestar Galactica (2003 miniseries) (Amazon | iTunes) * ER, season 9: "A Hopeless Wound" (Amazon | iTunes) * The Education of Max Bickford (Amazon | iTunes) * The Fearing Mind (Amazon | iTunes) * Undressed, season 2 (Amazon | iTunes) * Chicken Soup for the Soul: "Starlight, Star Bright" (Amazon | iTunes) * Zoe..., season 1: "Sympathy for Jack" (Amazon | iTunes)
