Mental Nomad Podcast 167: Ariel Support

As the title suggests, all songs in today's episode come from artists represented by the good folks at Ariel Publicity. Today's episode is also the first produced since my move to the Boston area, and my first produced on my new MacBook Pro.

Here's what you'll hear today (right-click to save MP3 file or stream it in a new tab or window):
  1. Richard Kincaid: "Angels" (from the album Return)
  2. Sylvia Bennett: "Smile" (from the album Smile)
  3. Shayfer James: "Life Is Beautiful" (from the album The Owl and the Elephant)
  4. Shayfer James: "Siren Song" (from The Owl and the Elephant)
  5. Davy Mooney: "Maybe Tomorrow" (from the album Ghosts of Music, Past)
  6. Jillian LaDage: "Bonny Was the Lady" (from the album The Ancestry)
  7. Jillian LaDage: "Midsummer's Night" (from The Ancestry)
  8. Sylvia Bennett: "Look of Love" (from Smile)
  9. Richard Kincaid: "Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word" (from Return)
  10. Sylvia Bennett: "Witchcraft" (from Smile)
  11. Davy Mooney: "The Captain's Daughter" (from Ghosts of Music, Past)
  12. Shayfer James: "When Heaven Closes" (from The Owl and the Elephant)
  13. Richard Kincaid: "Angel (club mix feat. DT)"
(Total play time: 1:01:52)

Only a handful of artists this time, but look for the shows to return to covering a wider array of sounds as I get used to this computer (and, most likely, after I buy a mouse for it -- using the laptop's trackpad makes drag-and-drop operations cumbersome, I find).

Monday Morning Mess 11: The On Fires

Today's music comes from The On Fires, an Australian band described as the "bastard child of the B-52s and the Sex Pistols" that recently wrapped up a tour of North America. Ye Olde Podcaster missed a chance to see them perform in Cambridge, Mass., on account of the public transportation schedules. Hopefully next time.

Here's what you'll hear today (right-click to download MP3 or to stream it in a new tab or window):
  1. "Arms Open"
  2. "Sorry Now"
  3. "Melancholy (intro)/Melancholy"
(Total play time: 12:38)

My thanks to the good people at Ariel Publicity for the music in today's Monday Morning Mess (and, in fact, all the songs in this coming Wednesday's episode of the Mental Nomad Podcast). You'll be hearing a LOT of Ariel artists in coming weeks and months; I've received so many packages from their clients since getting to my dorm that the mailroom has accidentally put "You have a package" slips meant for other people in my mailbox, assuming all packages are meant for me.

If you like what you've heard here, support the band by purchasing some of their music. And if you're feeling REALLY generous, you can make a Paypal donation to help cover hosting fees for my podcasts.

Celebrity crush: Grace Park

Another Monday, another new entry to the celebrity crush hall of fame here. Any affiliate payments earned from your Amazon or iTunes purchase or rental will help pay the hosting fees for my podcasts, so please consider clicking; alternately, if you'd prefer to make a donation through Paypal, I'd be most grateful for that as well.

On the "Hawaii 5-0" set
Name: Grace Park
Hometown: Born in Los Angeles but raised in the Canadian city of Vancouver, B.C., according to her Wikipedia profile. She's of Korean descent.
Best Known For: Obviously, that would be Battlestar Galactica, where she played "Boomer" and other variations on Cylon Number Eight. She's co-starring on the CBS remake of Hawaii 5-0 this fall, has co-starred on the CBC drama The Border and the Benjamin Bratt interventionist drama The Cleaner, and has even done video game work.

Park has been a guest star on lots of different programs -- often science fiction -- both here and in our Strange and Savage Neighbor to the North. For the sake of simplicity and length, I'm only including sales links to the items currently available on DVD or via iTunes here in the United States or likely to become available in time.
Humble Beginnings: After modeling and playing a dancer in the movie Romeo Must Die, she had a recurring role on the 2000 fantasy-adventure series The Immortal, starring The Anti-Talent (aka Lorenzo Lamas). She did five seasons of the Canadian teen soap Edgemont, which was also the launch pad for Smallville actress Kristin Kreuk.
Obligatory Edgy Stuff: Park's good looks aren't her only way of clouding men's minds a la The Shadow -- she has a psychology degree from the University of British Columbia. Plus, she wasn't afraid to pose for cheesecake photos.
Why Ye Olde Podcaster Likes Her: Though she's a bit skinny for my tastes, she is an attractive woman. More importantly, she showed a lot of range playing a femme fatale on The Cleaner and different characters with competing interests on Battlestar Galactica.
