Bob Mould: "Hardly Getting Over It"

(Note: Originally part of a series called "Bald Is Beautiful" with several now-deleted videos from non-podsafe artists.)

Kicking off the last day of Bald Is Beautiful 2008, we have this live cut from the former Husker Du and Sugar frontman.

Mould has been openly gay since the 1990s, and it was a bit of an "open secret" before then, according to his Wikipedia entry. Considering how hardcore Husker Du's music was, especially for the 1980s, it's interesting that the fan base stuck with him ... an American equivalent to British punk star Pete Shelley (of the band Buzzcocks), perhaps.

Episode 88: Running Long Like the Oscars

Today's opening track is the Oscar award-winning song from the indie film Once. The show also ends with a song from a movie, though sadly not an Oscar winner as I first thought when introducing it. The people in between aren't exactly slacking, either.

Here's what you'll hear today (direct download here):

Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova: "Falling Slowly"
Kitaro: "Floating Lotus"
Bettye Lavette: "Down to Zero"
Jorge Ramirez: "Tu Cancion"
Sean Hayes: "Flowering Spade"
Jayme Dawicki: "Shatter Queen"
Billy Falcon: "The Rest of the Song"
Gum: "Try Stopping Me Now"
Jonathan Coulton: "Famous Blue Raincoat"
The Sky About to Rain: "Desert Breakdown 1"
Curtis Mayfield: "Superfly"

Tracks 2, 5, and 11 come courtesy of the IODA Promonet and may be downloaded below. (Well, not Curtis Mayfield -- the promotion ended after I did the episode but before its air date, apparently.) Tracks 9 and 10 come from the artists' Web sites. Track 6 was obtained directly from the artist, who sent me her new CD, and everything else comes courtesy of the Podsafe Music Network.

Frank Black and Morris Teper: "I Burn Today"

(Note: Originally part of a series called "Bald Is Beautiful" with several now-deleted videos from non-podsafe artists.)

Frank Black's hair is longer here than I've seen it in other places, but he's "clean-headed" often enough to get a pass for this temporary break from baldness.

Look for a contest announcement after midnight, with two new songs for your listening pleasure, then more music videos tomorrow. (Maybe even one more tonight, but that's doubtful ... typing this on a breather from work, hence lack of Amazon or iTunes link action.)

Remember: All you have to do in the contest now is comment with what you like or don't like about the podcast, your real name and mailing address (which won't be published), and then wait until early May for me to draw the winners.

Up to 10 people will receive one specific prize paid for out of Ye Olde Podcaster's own pocket in gratitude, and others will receive other prizes provided by musician friends of the show based on the amount of effort and thought that I judge went into the answer.

Solstice Coil: "Walking Graveyards (live, acoustic)"

(Note: Originally part of a series called "Bald Is Beautiful" with several now-deleted videos from non-podsafe artists.)

Here's a video from a band I've played a few times on the podcast, the Israeli progressive rock band Solstice Coil. Continuing the theme of "cleanhead" musicians...

Solstice Coil - A Prescription for Paper Cuts

The Take It From the Head site currently lists 1,037 bald musicians. I won't be playing all of them, but I have amassed a long enough list I could do this for a while. Just depends on my mood, as usual.

(A hint, though: I won't be featuring G-ry Gl-tt-r. I'm loathe to even type the name of that child-exploiting piece of filth. In fact, I just went back and struck through the vowels so as to minimize the monster's presence here. Seeing his name and photograph on the list there -- though it's factual -- made my stomach turn for a moment.)

Episode 87: Name Dropping like a Jackass

Audio is spottier this time, and I apologize in advance. I'm still learning the Zoom H2's ins and outs, and I simply held it too close this time ... forgetting it didn't have the spacial limitations of the plug-in mic I'd been using. It'll be better next time; the music still kicks ass.

Here's what you'll hear today (direct download here):

Steve Earle: "Copperhead Road (live at Montreaux 2005)"
Pete Seeger: "Russian Song/Ode to Joy"
Bazza: "Friendship"
Krista Detor: "Robert Johnson Has Left Mississippi"
Blake Leyh: "151 Canal"
Moshe Chouraki: "Frontieres dela Liberte"
Planetakis: "Don't Fuck with Robert Smith"
Steve Kilbey: "Life's Little Luxuries"
Cassandra Kubinski: "Red Hot Romance"
Stefanie Harger: "The Very Thought of You"

Tracks 1, 6, 9 and 10 came courtesy of the Podsafe Music Network. Tracks 2, 4, 7 and 8 came courtesy of the IODA Promonet and may be downloaded below. The remaining two tracks came from CDs provided by the artists.

Blake Leyh was music supervisor for HBO's recently wrapped series The Wire, and he composed "The Fall," the series' end-title music as well as helping pick the show's music (collected on two soundtracks: Beyond Hamsterdam: Baltimore Tracks from THE WIRE and the dialogue-inclusive ... And All the Pieces Matter: Five Years of Music from THE WIRE, which feature overlapping tracks but not exclusively -- you DO need both for the full sonic landscape of the show).

The track from his album X-Ray Yankee Zulu Tango that I'm featuring in today's show, Leyh recently commented either in his blog or elsewhere, is as close to a full-length version of "The Fall" as you're likely to find -- it sounds different, but it features all the same players. Steve Earle had a recurring role on the series as Walon, police informant and one-man Greek chorus Bubbles' sponsor in the 12-step recovery process, and his cover of Tom Waits' song "Way Down in the Hole" (from his album Washington Square Serenade) served as the theme music for the show's fifth and final season.
