The first time I saw Steve Earle perform, it was an outdoor show with Southern Culture on the Skids and another act whose name escapes me opening for him. He sang a couple of tunes with Allison Moorer -- whom he introduced as his opening act for the upcoming The Revolution Starts Now tour -- and a couple with Emmylou Harris.
I thought Allison sounded good, but come on -- Emmylou Harris was also up there for a couple of tunes. No one compares to that goddess.
The second time I saw Earle, it was at the end of the tour. He and Allison had fallen in love on the road and had married by that point or would do so soon after. She sang quite a few more of the numbers with him during his portion of the show, and he played mandolin on a song during her set.
Grammy nominations were announced yesterday. His album Washington Square Serenade was nominated in the Best Contemporary Folk Album category, and their duet "Days Aren't Long Enough" was nominated in one of the song categories.
